Accretropin™ (hGH)

Cangene’s hGH (Recombinant Human Growth Hormone, rhGH) is a sterile preparation of a polypeptide Growth Hormone produced by recombinant DNA technology. hGH has an amino acid sequence identical to that of human growth hormone of pituitary origin. This product is intended for subcutaneous injection.

Growth hormone plays a central role in the modulation of growth from birth until completion of puberty. In the total absence of GH, linear growth occurs at about half to one third the normal rate. Growth hormone also plays an important role in the control of body anabolism throughout life. The established use of GH replacement therapy is in treatment of children who suffer any forms of GH-deficiency and short stature of Turner's Syndrome patients. While the best response to treatment occurs in children with severe growth hormone deficiency, therapy with growth hormone will increase the rate of statural growth in children with short stature of much etiology.

Prior to the development of rhGH, the only source of exogenous human growth hormone (hGH) was from human pituitary glands obtained at necropsy. In vitro, preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that rhGH is therapeutically equivalent to human growth hormone of pituitary origin with equivalent pharmacokinetics in normal children and adults.

Accretropin is approved by the FDA.
